Greenhouse Strawberry Cultivation Guide

Jun. 23, 2026

Greenhouse strawberry cultivation has become a mainstream high-profit commercial planting model worldwide, breaking the seasonal limitations of open-field planting and enabling year-round fruit supply. Compared with outdoor planting, greenhouse strawberry growth is completely controlled by artificial environments. Reasonable variety selection, precise temperature and humidity regulation, and scientific pest and disease prevention are the three core factors determining yield, fruit quality and economic benefits. For commercial growers, standardized planting techniques can effectively reduce loss rates, improve fruit sweetness and uniformity, and maximize planting profits.

Selecting suitable varieties is the primary premise of successful greenhouse strawberry planting, adapting to the relatively closed and stable microclimate of greenhouses. For commercial continuous production and high yield, ever-bearing and day-neutral strawberry varieties are the best choices. Classic high-quality varieties include Elsanta and Galletta, which are widely recognized for their large, firm fruits, strong disease resistance and stable yield, with a single fruit weight of 25-35 grams and a high commodity rate. For off-season and winter greenhouse planting, short-day varieties with low temperature resistance and early flowering characteristics are preferred, which can bloom and fruit in low-light and low-temperature greenhouse environments. These varieties have strong adaptability to greenhouse ventilation and light transmission conditions, avoiding poor growth and low fruit setting rate caused by environmental mismatch.

Precise temperature and humidity management throughout the growth cycle is the key to improving strawberry yield and quality, and different growth stages have strict environmental parameter requirements. Before budding, the greenhouse temperature should be maintained at 26-28°C during the day and 10-15°C at night to promote robust seedling growth and flower bud differentiation. During the budding and flowering period, properly reduce the temperature to 25-26°C in the daytime and 8-12°C at night to avoid high temperature flower drop and ensure normal pollination. In the fruiting and coloring stage, the optimal day temperature is 16-22°C and night temperature is 6-10°C, which helps accumulate sugar and improve fruit sweetness. For humidity control, keep the relative humidity stable at 60%-75% all the time. Excessively high humidity above 85% will induce fungal diseases, while humidity below 60% will cause plant water stress and affect pollination and fruiting. Growers can adjust humidity through greenhouse ventilation systems, drip irrigation and dehumidification equipment to maintain a balanced growth environment.

Pest and disease control is an indispensable part of greenhouse strawberry cultivation. The closed greenhouse environment is prone to high humidity and poor air circulation, leading to frequent fungal diseases and insect pests. Common diseases include gray mold and powdery mildew. Gray mold mainly damages flowers and fruits, causing fruit rot and mildew, which can be effectively prevented by strengthening ventilation, reducing air humidity and avoiding overhead watering. Powdery mildew often occurs in high-temperature and humid environments, and regular greenhouse cleaning and reasonable plant spacing can significantly reduce the incidence. Common pests are two-spotted spider mites, aphids and thrips, which suck plant juice and hinder growth and fruiting.

Adopting integrated pest management (IPM) is the most scientific and efficient solution for greenhouses. For physical prevention, hang yellow and blue sticky traps to trap and kill adult pests and regularly remove weeds and diseased leaves to cut off pest and disease transmission paths. For biological control, introduce natural enemies such as Phytoseiulus persimilis for spider mites and Aphidius colemani for aphids, which is safe and pollution-free and suitable for high-quality organic strawberry planting. For severe infestations, use low-toxicity and high-efficiency pesticides in a standardized manner, focusing on early prevention and regular inspection to avoid large-scale disease and pest outbreaks.

Standardized greenhouse strawberry cultivation relies on professional environmental regulation and refined management. Matching suitable varieties with stage-precise temperature and humidity control, combined with scientific integrated pest and disease prevention, can stably improve strawberry yield and fruit quality. Our team provides one-stop customized greenhouse solutions for strawberry commercial planting, including greenhouse structural design, intelligent environmental control system installation and planting technical guidance, helping global growers achieve stable and high-yield strawberry planting and create higher commercial value.
